- Free legal and personal aid to those who can’t afford it. Just $50 covers an hour of help for someone in need.
- Advocacy for prisoners facing injustice. Approximately 70% of our clients have their sentences reduced or obtained earlier pre-release custody.
- Support for families struggling with a loved one’s incarceration. We reconnect inmates to estranged families.
- Protection for the innocent. We’ve worked to exonerate wrongfully convicted people, including successfully releasing an inmate serving a 20+ year sentence after being framed by corrupt law enforcement.

We deliver on the promise of liberty and justice – one individual, one family, and one case at a time. As a formally organized legal charity, we provide free and low-cost services through our helplines, clinics, advocacy for individual injustices, advocacy for legal and policy change, delivering free information, training and support to individuals across the broad spectrum of circumstances where the government has come – prosecuting. We provide extensive support to pro-se litigants, including prisoners across the nation. We also have D.A.S. affiliated attorneys who litigate individual, impact, and class action cases.
Our successes depend on the generosity of our volunteers, and financial support that primarily comes from individual households across the United States. We also depend on law firms, foundations and cause-oriented staff that routinely serve above and beyond expectations.
